An obstetrician is a physician who has successfully completed specialized education and training in the management of pregnancy, labor, and puerperium (the time-period directly following childbirth).
A gynecologist is a physician who has a successfully completed specialized education and training in the health of the female reproductive system, including the diagnosis and treatment of disorders and diseases. Typically, the education and training for both fields occurs concurrently. Thus, an Obstetrician/Gynecologist is a physician specialist who provides medical and surgical care to women and has particular expertise in pregnancy, childbirth, and disorders of the reproductive system. This includes preventative care, prenatal care, detection of sexually transmitted diseases, Pap test screening and family planning.
The Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at St.Philomena's Hospital is a discipline of medicine (often abbreviated to OB/GYN, O&G or Obs & Gynae) are the two surgical specialties dealing with the female reproductive organs, and as such are often combined to form a single medical speciality and postgraduate training program. This combined training prepares the practicing OB/GYN to be adept at the surgical management of the entire scope of clinical pathology involving female reproductive organs, and to provide care for both pregnant and non-pregnant patients.
All gynaecologists, are trained obstetricians, although the reverse is not necessarily true. However, some OB/GYNs may choose to drop the obstetric component of their practice and focus solely on gynaecology, especially as they get older. This decision is often based on the double burden of very late hours and, depending on the country, high rates of litigation. The section has been designed to provide a platform for all Obstetricians, Gynaecologists and others interested in Obs. & Gynaecology as a science in India & abroad. We aim to provide a medium for free and healthy interaction with easy access to relevant information. An active mailing list & Case discussion are running to facilitate exchange of ideas.
