Urology as a specialty was practiced at St. Philomena’s Hospital many years ago, along with General surgery by Dr. T .S Jairam. It has for long been a destination for urological treatment. Dr. Joseph Anthony, the first trained urologist in Karnataka, started specialized work in 1966 and continues to serve as a consultant. Later, Dr. H. S. Bhatt from CMC, Vellore, practiced in the Hospital from the mid-1970s for about ten years. The Dept has 2 committed and experienced Urological Consultants who run the outpatient section six days a week, as well as perform operations throughout the week. The common problems that are encountered are Stone diseases and urinary obstruction, to name a few. Since 98% of Stone disease can be managed endoscopically, the department is well equipped to treat with minimally invasive procedures. Re-constructive operations are also performed regularly. The outpatients average 100 per week and operations 400 per year.
The Department contributes and caters to the needs of the poorer section of population. Good quality and care at affordable cost for treatment have been the hallmark, in line with the motto of the J.M.J. Society, the founders of St. Philomena’s Hospital.
